Let’s talk about bootstrapping.

Starting a business with little to no outside funding. Self-funded. Shoestring budget. Hustle meets resourcefulness.

We’ve all been there, those amongst us who have brace self employment, contract work, creating and growing a business, a lot of us still are there in some way.

And while it’s often romanticised as noble or gritty, it bothers me because it isn’t free, it’s not without its costs, in fact sometimes the cost can be critical.

But, in the interest of balance, and for those who may have heard the term but never really understood it, here’s my thoughts.

The Pros:
✅ You stay in control. No investors, no diluted vision.
✅ You learn fast. Constraints force creativity and better decision-making.
✅ You build lean and focused, not bloated and wasteful.
✅ You own all the upside.

The Cons:
❌ You wear every hat, even the ones that don’t fit.
❌ Growth is slower. What you gain in control, you often lose in speed.
❌ Burnout risk is real. When the money runs tight, the pressure cranks up.
❌ You can get stuck in the business rather than building it.

Bootstrapping builds skilss & resilience, yes, but it can also build bad habits. think about it like your driving test, for those of us who have been driving for 10, 20, 30, 40 years even, would we pass our driving test if we had to take it again today! No way! ( I don’t care how good you think you are, lol)

Bad habits around bootstrapping can look like: Underpricing. Overdelivering. Avoiding help. Running on fumes.

Knowing when to keep bootstrapping, and when to ‘think and act differently’ is where the self awareness and I believe the real opportunity to grow comes in.

When to invest in support, systems or structure.
When to say “I can’t do this bit on my own.”

Bootstrapping isn’t a badge of honour, or at least it shouldn’t be, it’s a stage. Hustle shouldn’t be a culture and definitely not an aspirational one, how about looking at 80% being your target capacity, not 100% and definitely not the nobbish 110% as you can’t give more than 100%!

Some stay in Bootstrapping or hustle longer than they need to. Some leave it too soon. Growing too fast can be harder sometimes! Try putting all the systems and processes in place once you are busy and successful (speech marks) 😁

How about being honest about where you are and what you need?

Wherever you are on that journey, early stage, scaling up, starting over, just know you don’t have to do it on your own. Look around you for people you can learn from, ask them, they invariably will give you time and experience.
